A gift from Belgium.

The War Memorial has the pair of lions that once guarded the Menin Gate in the town of Ypres, a place that sensibly was pronounced wipers by the thousands of Aussie soldiers who passed through them (many to be sadly killed), to attempt pronouncing it the Belgian way may have involved them having to undergo procedures such as having their tongues removed, much better to play it safe.
They now make an impressive entryway to the Memorial, but I have to wonder why they chose Britain's most famous native animal, so highly regarded they even use a lion emblem on their cricket outfits.
